In the Victorian era Middlesbrough produced two football teams. One was at odds with the cordial spirit of the times, Middlesbrough Ironopolis, and was formed by hirsute-lipped gentlemen who broke away from the town’s other team, Middlesbrough FC, with a view to professional glory. Despite Middlesbrough FC’s gentleman’s game image they were so serious in competition that they went on to win three Northern League titles, two Amateur Cups and reached an FA Cup quarter-final. They’d attempted to turn professional in 1889, but the move was vetoed, which lead to their spurned supporters forming the Ironopolis team. The Nops – also known as “the washers” in reference to the cost of running the club, “washers” being a term used to describe coins – folded five years later due, amongst other reasons, to a lack of washers to pay for travel costs to away games. They do at least have the distinction of having by far and away the most evocative team name and ground name in football history though, in the form of Paradise Field, where they played their final game, a local derby against South Bank that ended in a 1-1 draw in 1894.

Middlesbrough FC reverted back to amateur status in 1892, before embarking on that silverware spree in the late 1890s that eventually led to First Division football at Ayresome Park, next door to the Paradise Field site, in the early 1900s.
